FIELD TRIP #1
Galena Wetland Mitigation Bank

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 — 1 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, May 5, 2009 — 8 to 11:30 a.m.
hosted by The Utah Department of Transportation

The Utah Department of Transportation developed a 25.35 acre mitigation bank on a 252 acre parcel of land based on the watershed approach. This approach has focused on the Jordan River Watershed and created a partnership with the Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, the Utah Department of Corrections, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Utah Division of Water Rights, the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources, and local interest groups.

A major premise for this Mitigation Bank is to lower the temperature of the geothermal water used by the Prison Facility as a heat source and currently discharged to the Jordan River. Eventually the Jordan River is planned to be classed as a cold water fishery. When this status is obtained, water temperatures should be at or below 68.5 degrees. The Mitigation Bank’s wetlands accept the excess water from ... [click here for more info]

FIELD TRIP #2
Kennecott Mitigation Bank & Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 — 1 to 5 p.m.
Hosted by Kennecott Utah Copper

Dress appropriately – closed toe shoes and long pants are strongly recommended.  Weather is capricious in early May, dress in layers.  There will be opportunities to get out and walk around.  Also bring some bug spray and binoculars!

Bird watchers – be sure to bring your binoculars! In 1996, Kennecott purchased land adjacent to the Great Salt Lake, where it created the Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve (ISSR) to offset the loss of wetlands affected by expansion of its tailings impoundment, where it disposes of waste sands created in its operations. By cleaning the reserve site of garbage created by years of illegal dumping; obtaining, directing, and damming water sources to sustain the wetland communities; and fencing off the site, Kennecott was able to transform the area into an important component in the Great Salt Lake ecosystem.

In 1998, Kennecott expanded the 2,500-acre ISSR to 3,670 acres and created one of the largest wetland mitigation banks in the United States, with 700 approved credits. Located about 20 miles west of Salt Lake City, the ISSR consists of five mitigation ponds managed for shorebirds and waterfowl and four additional ponds that constitute the Mitigation Bank.  Kennecott can use.... FIELD TRIP #3
Machine Lake Bank

Tuesday, May 5, 2009— 1 to 5 p.m.
Wednesday, May 6, 2009 — 8 to 11:30 a.m.

hosted by RP Wetlands

The Machine Lake (also known as the Knudson Marsh) originated in the early 1900s with the Knudson Family and was part of the large land holding of that group.  The Machine Lake name stuck from an old horse-drawn hay cutting machine that was stuck in the lake when the water rose and was never recovered.  The marsh has been studied since the 1940s on and off and was considered one of the most productive sites for the Redhead (Aythya Americana) duck in the United States at one time. On any given day you will find huge flocks of migrating birds on the site.  It truly is a waterfowl and bird lover’s paradise.

The Machine Lake Mitigation Bank is located in Brigham City, Utah and is part of a large wetland complex that includes several properties and eventually leads into the Great Salt Lake Complex.  It is located in the Bear River Watershed.  Its neighbor on two sides of the property is the famous National Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (a 74,000 acre complex).  The complex is on an international flyway.... EXHIBITS: Early Exhibit Deadline is January 25, 2009

Exhibitors always come back to this conference because they always see results! This is an exceptional opportunity for those wishing to share information about their products and services with the mitigation and conservation banking industry. And the exhibit area is where you "meet and greet" all attendees and guests -- for continental breakfasts, all breaks and receptions.

The 2008 conference attracted over 400 attendees from over 38 states, U.S. territories and countries. This is a targeted audience for exhibitors — attendees are serious about their participation in the conference. They come from businesses, governments (local, state and federal), nonprofits, and universities — and can be further broken down by suppliers, attorneys, engineers, real estate developers, planners, consultants, bankers, interested observers, regulators, investors, customers, users and other interests.

EXHIBITORS: in 2008, we sold out our exhibit space — so be sure to register for your booth early online. Click here for Exhibitor Application.

SPOUSE / FAMILY / GUEST PROGRAM

Tuesday, May 5, Noon – 5 p.m.
PARK CITY & UTAH OLYMPIC PARK
Cost:  $77 (early 3/24); $97 (late after 3/24) per person (includes transportation, special tour and admission to Olympic Sports Park)

Escape to the fascinating town of Park City and 6000’ elevation, where the air is cool and so are the sights. Worth the trip for the scenery alone!

At the Utah Olympic Park, the 387-acre Olympic venue is now a training facility that was opened in 1993. The 1,335-meter bobsleigh/luge track with five start areas is one of only 12 competition-certified refrigerated tracks in the world. Ski jumps for 90- and 120-meter Nordic events are used for training and competition year-round.  Docents hop on the tour bus and take the group to the top of the runs, and the top of the jumps. At each location, they explain each of the sports, and what it takes for an athlete to compete. Guests may see athletes in practice on these runs.  Guests will also visit the Alf Engen Ski Museum, the most definitive ski museum in the country. Here they’ll see memorabilia from the 2002 Games, and learn about the evolution of skiing, and discover the science of how Utah can call its snow “The Greatest Snow on Earth”.

The next stop is Park City, which had its beginnings in the mining boom of the late 19th century. Learn about its colorful history as it changed from a mining town to a world famous ski resort area. Spend time soaking in the history on historic Main Street, or browsing the unique shops and galleries or enjoy lunch on your own at one of the many eclectic restaurants. (Although there’s more than shopping in Park City, it’s important to note that May is “shoulder season” in Park City, which means that some (not all) of the shops and restaurants may be closed as the proprietors and staff go on vacation between winter and summer tourist seasons).

HISTORIC CITY TOUR
Cost:  $69 (early by 3/24) and $89 (late after 3/24) per person (includes transportation, tour admissions, tour guide and lunch at the Lion House)

The Mormons who settled Salt Lake City were refugees from the eastern US, and from Europe. We can’t wait to show you the city they built! We’ll drive around Temple Square explaining each of the buildings, then drive up to the state capitol building which overlooks the whole valley. The view from the capitol steps is magnificent. We’ll tour the building which recently completed a $250 million dollar renovation. Murals lining the Georgian marble rotunda walls tell the story of the settling of the Old West – and the rotunda has a fascinating story of its own. Back on the bus, the tour includes a drive past the elegant mansions on South Temple Street.  Many of these homes were built with wealth derived from the Park City sliver-mining boom of the late 1800’s. One of these mansions is the Governor’s residence, which is the largest in the United States.  We’ll drive through the University of Utah and the complex of hospitals in the area, explaining each of them, while admiring the views on the other side of the bus. Then we’ll visit Pioneer Trail State Park and This-Is-The-Place Park at the mouth of Emigration Canyon where a replica of the trains that joined the country in 1869 will take guests through the Jamestown-like village. Here also is a monument that stands as a tribute to the explorers who were instrumental in settling this area – including the trappers, Catholic padres and the Mormons themselves. See the University of Utah’s Rice/Eccles Stadium, site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and the Army’s Old Fort Douglas, site of the 2002 Olympic Athlete’s Village.  En route back to downtown, guests will view Trolley Square, a unique shopping center built in trolley barns from the early 1900’s. Once back in Salt Lake, a delicious lunch awaits at the Lion House – one of the original homes and territorial office of city founder, and territory governor Brigham Young. After lunch, the group will tour the Beehive House, Brigham Young’s beautifully restored home.

Thursday, May 7, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
SNOWBIRD TRAM & SPA
Cost:  $79 (early by 3/24) and $95 (late after 3/24) per person (includes transportation, tram ride, tour guide).  Spa treatments are at the cost of individual guests

Nestled at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird Resort features breathtaking views of the valley in a breath-taking alpine setting. Little Cottonwood is the source where all of the granite for the Salt Lake Mormon Temple, and Conference Center was quarried. You are surrounded by rugged granite peaks everywhere you look and you may even glimpse some of the local wildlife, including deer, moose and mountain goats. While at Snowbird, guests can ride the tram to the top of Hidden Peak, 11,000 feet above sea level. Passengers are invited to disembark, take in the alpine vista, and even explore as conditions allow. A magnificent vista of the Salt Lake Valley and beyond awaits. Be sure to bring a jacket though, as there are still skiers sharing the tram ride, and the area may be covered in snow. It’s often much cooler at 11,000’ than it is 7,000’ below in the Salt Lake valley!  During this tour, you will have the option of purchasing a spa treatment as well. Just tell us which treatment you would like at the time of the tour registration before the conference, and we will reserve it for you. The spa is on the top floor of the Cliff Lodge, and looks out over the valley and the towering peaks and ski runs above the lodge. It’s an inspiring and soothing locale to unwind, and to be pampered. You can unwind in the spa - or spend your time shopping, dining, taking the tram, and exploring the sights.
